WHAT IF VIRTUAL REALITY COULD ACT AS A MENTAL PAINKILLER? AS ACCESS TO THERAPY STRUGGLES TO KEEP UP WITH DEMAND, FLOW EXPLORES VR AS AN ALTERNATIVE TOOL FOR RELIEVING CHRONIC STRESS AND ANXIETY.



WHILE MOST RELAXATION-FOCUSED VR EXPERIENCES RELY ON NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS, THIS PROJECT INVESTIGATES WHETHER ABSTRACT VISUAL PATTERNS CAN OFFER SIMILAR CALMING EFFECTS. THE RESULT IS A CUSTOMIZABLE VR ENVIRONMENT BUILT AROUND DYNAMIC, ORGANIC PATTERNS DESIGNED TO PROMOTE RELAXATION. USER TESTING REVEALED THAT SIMPLER VISUALS WITH SLOWER MOTION WERE PERCEIVED AS THE MOST CALMING, WHILE MORE COMPLEX PATTERNS COULD FEEL OVERWHELMING. OVERALL, PARTICIPANTS REPORTED REDUCED STRESS LEVELS, MINIMAL CYBERSICKNESS, AND A SENSE OF EMOTIONAL RELIEF. A SECOND EVALUATION FOCUSING ON USABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY CONFIRMED THAT FLOW IS INTUITIVE, IMMERSIVE, AND EFFECTIVE IN SUPPORTING PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING. INSIGHTS FROM THESE STUDIES INFORMED THE FINAL PROTOTYPE, REFINING VISUAL DESIGN, SPATIAL COMPOSITION, AND INTERACTION TO OPTIMIZE BOTH COMFORT AND USABILITY.
