THE VOICE BOX

What if the audience was also the
performer? How can one give them the
power to perform? How to give them the
voice they need?
The Voicebox installation, exhibited
for the collective exhibition of
Time Based Media class, is a project
that features 3 voices with heavy audio
effects on top to make them
unrecognisable, and which can be
controlled, along with the volume of
each voice, with a custom-made,
somewhat mysterious MIDI controller.
The goal of the project is to turn the
audience into the performer, by simply
providing them the materials and
instruments necessary for the concert
atmosphere. This way, the result is
 completely unexpected, as the possible
combinations of filter-voices are very
numerous, along with their effect of
the moment of the song (Jazz Standard
September Song, in Ab Major, sang in
Ana Souto Neves’ voice). The project is
also paired with a written piece that
immitates a simple ticket holder card
containing 2 tickets encouraging the
reader/audience/performer to attend the
concert.

Midi Controller made with Arduino
Uno controller with 6 knobs paired
with an Ableton software to control
the volume and the filter of 3
independent tracks (harmonised
voice recordings) coming from 3
individual speakers.
