VERSHAL HET VEEM

THIS GRAPHIC POSTER IS THE RESULT OF A STUDY OF THE “VERSHAL HET VEEM” BUILDING FROM THE 1940S TO A HYPOTHETICAL FUTURE SPECULATED BY INVESTORS IN THE BUILDING IN STRIJP-S, IN EINDHOVEN.

AFTER LOOKING IN ARCHIVES, ONLINE RESEARCH, INTERVIEWS AND LOCAL EXPLORATION I HAVE COME TO KNOW THAT THE VERSHAL IS AN OLD “PHILLIPS” BUILDING AND USED TO BE A STOCKING PLACE FOR THE PRODUCTS AND MATERIALS USED BY THE COMPANY, BACK TO WHEN STRIJP-S WAS ACCESSIBLE TO “PHILIPS” EMPLOYEES ALONE. HOWEVER,  SHORTLY AFTER THE WORLD WAR II WHEN BIG FLOODS TOOK PLACE IN THE NETHERLANDS, IT WAS ALSO USED BY PEOPLE WHOSE HOUSES HAD BEEN DESTROYED AND HAD NO PLACE TO STAY.

LOOKING AT IT NOW, FULLY MODERNISED AND USED BY MULTIPLE BUSINESSES TO OFFER PRODUCTS OR ACTIVITIES TO THE PUBLIC, IT CAN BE SEEN AS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THE GENTRIFICATION PHENOMENON IN THE NETHERLANDS. ADDITIONALLY, INVESTORS HAVE BEEN SPECULATING ON THE BUILDING OF A TOWER THAT WOULD LATER BECOME A HOTEL AND SHOPPING MALL, BRINGING IN MORE PEOPLE AND CONTRIBUTING EVEN MORE TO THE PHENOMENON.
